Sandhyopasana is very essential for twice-born (Brahmins). Without this, one cannot perform other rituals properly. Thus, it is necessary for the twice-born to do Sandhya.
1. Preparation: After bathing, wear two clean clothes and sit on an asana (mat) facing east, northeast, or north. The asana should be placed in a north-south direction. Wear a Tulsi or Rudraksha mala (necklace). Wear a ring made of Kusha grass on both ring fingers. Recite the Gayatri mantra, tie your hair tuft (Shikha), apply Tilak, and do Achaman (sipping water ritual).
2. Achaman: Using the following mantras, do Achaman three times and wash hands:
3. Viniyog and Marjan: Recite the following Viniyog mantra and sprinkle water (Marjan):
4. Asana Purification: Recite the following mantra and sprinkle water on the asana:
5. Sankalp (Resolve): Take Kusha grass and water in hand and recite the Sankalp mantra, then drop the water:
Before doing Pranayama, recite the following Viniyog:
Close your eyes and recite the following mantras three times during each Pranayama session:
Use the thumb to close the right nostril and inhale slowly through the left nostril.
While inhaling, meditate on Lord Vishnu with blue complexion and four arms.
After inhaling, use the ring and little fingers to close the left nostril as well and hold the breath.
Meditate on Lord Brahma with red complexion and four faces.
Release the thumb and slowly exhale through the right nostril.
Meditate on Lord Shiva with a white complexion on your forehead.
After Pranayama, perform Achaman again using the same mantras mentioned before.
Pranayama purifies the mind and body. It burns internal impurities like fire purifies metals extracted from mountains. Regular practice of Pranayama makes a person radiant and healthy, and it is essential for achieving long life and spiritual progress.
The proper intake and regulation of breath ensure that oxygen reaches every part of the lungs, thus purifying the blood and distributing nutrients throughout the body. Regular Pranayama practice can even improve one's beauty and health significantly.
Pranayama, when practiced correctly, helps in burning internal impurities and achieving mental and physical well-being. It also aids in attaining spiritual growth and long life. Even if one cannot perform the complete Sandhya ritual, a brief practice of Pranayama with Gayatri mantra can fulfill the requirement.
