Ganesh Chaturthi 2025

In 2025, the Ganesh Chaturthi celebrations will start on Wednesday, 27 August 2025. The visarjan will be on Anant Chaturdashi on Saturday, 6 September 2025.

Why do we celebrate Ganesh Chaturthi?

Ganesh Chaturthi is the celebration of Lord Ganesha’s birthday. Did you know that there is a very interesting story behind Lord Ganesha's birth? Goddess Parvati wanted a loyal devotee, like Shiva had Nandi. Once, Parvati asked Nandi to guard the door while she was bathing. But when Shiva arrived, Nandi could not refuse his master from entering. In search of a faithful devotee, she created Ganesha from the turmeric paste to guard her door.

Later, when Shiva arrived, Ganesha stopped him from entering. Shiva was furious. How could a strange boy stop him from entering his residence? So, he cut off his head in anger. When Parvati came to know about the loss of her son, she was devastated. She threatened to destroy the whole universe. To pacify her anger, Shiva managed to arrange an elephant head, making it alive again. Ganesha was declared the leader of all the beings (Ganas), ranging from insects, humans, and celestial beings. Hence the name Ganapati, the leader of the ganas.

Spiritual Meaning of Ganesha's Story -

Parvati: represents the divine kundalini shakti within us. It resides at the base of our spine.
Nandi is symbolic of a pure attendant, devoted to his master.
Ganesha: represents our ego, which resists the supreme being (Shiva) from entering. Replacing Ganesha's head with a large elephant's head means our small individual ego gets replaced by selfless awareness.
Ganesha, as the Lord of Ganas, symbolises that by honouring him, we offer our respects to all beings, ensuring the success of our efforts.
