 Everyone who belongs to the religion of Hindu knows about the story of Samudra Manthan. It is not only through the medium of puranas , but credit also goes to producers , directors who showed Samudra Manthan in episodes of Vishnu Puran serial.  Well the most common story related to the cup of nectar(amrit)  that came out of the sea, for drinking which a dispute arose between the gods and the demons. After which Lord Vishnu took the form of a woman named Mohini and made the gods drink nectar.  It is not only the nectar that came out from the churning of the ocean , also many other ratnas came out .In this article we will discuss the samudra manthan 14 ratnas.


Story behind the Samudra Mantra . 

Before starting the discussion about the samudra manthan 14 ratnas , let us know the story behind the samudra mantra.According to stories in Vishnu puran , Maharishi Durvasa angrily cursed Devtas that they will be devoid of wealth . As everyone was aware of Maharishi Durvasa curse effects , they all rushed immediately for God Vishnu Ji;s help . Seeing the worry of Devtas , Vishnu Ji told them to churn the oceans along with Raksha's help.  Churning the ocean will produce Amrit (nectar) and by drinking nectar you all will become immortals (amar). The Gods also told the story of Amrit Kalash to the demon king Bali. They got ready to churn the ocean. The neti (rope) of Vasuki Naga was prepared and the ocean was churned with the help of Mandarachal mountain. This churning produced 13 other ratans along with the amrit kalash. In the next paragraph, we will discuss the 14 ratnas of Samudra Manthan.

Halahal (Poison)


During the churning of the ocean, the first thing that came out of the water was poison. The flame of this turmoil was very intense. Due to the intensity of the flame of this poison, all the gods and goddesses started burning. Then everyone together prayed to Lord Shiva to bear the poison, so Lord Shiva filled the poison in his mouth. Lord Shiva kept this poison in his throat, due to which his throat turned blue


Horse (Uchchaishrava)

 and Lord Shiva was named Neelkanth.

During the churning of the ocean, the second gem emerged, a white horse. The white colored Ucchaih Shrava horse was considered to be the fastest and flying horse. This is the king of horses. Bali, the king of demons, kept this seven-headed horse with himself. Later it came to Indra which Tarakasur snatched from Indra. After this, when Tarakasura was defeated, it came back to Indra.


Airavata (elephant)                                     

Airavata is a white elephant. Airavata was given to Indra at the time of distribution of the gems obtained from churning. It is now difficult to find a white elephant with four tusks. All elephants look good and beautiful but it is amazing to see a white elephant. Airavata was the king of white elephants. The elephant born from the sea has been named Airavata.


Kaustubh Mani

Lord Vishnu wore this gem. It is believed that now such a gem is left only with the wishful serpents. It is said that Lord Krishna had freed Kaliya Nag from the terror of Garuda, then Kaliya Nag took this gem from his head and gave it to Kanha. In this sense, this gem should be in some cave on earth or in the part of Dwarka that is submerged in the sea.


Kamdhenu

During the churning of the ocean, Kamdhenu cows emerged. This cow was endowed with divine powers. Therefore, keeping in mind the public welfare, this cow was given to the sages.Cow is an important animal for the survival of mankind. The cow has been called Kamadhenu. Kamdhenu is the one who obeys everyone. In that period the cow was called Dhenu. It is also a sacred animal in Hindu religion.


Kalpavriksha

This tree is also called Kalpadrum or Kalpataru. After receiving it, Devraj Indra installed it in Surkanan. In Skandpuran and Vishnu Puran, Parijat itself has been called Kalpavaksha.


Goddess Lakshmi

Goddess Lakshmi was also born in the form of a gem during the churning of the ocean. Lakshmi means Shri and origin of prosperity. It is believed that in any house where women are respected, prosperity prevails there. After her incarnation, the gods and demons all wanted Lakshmi to meet them. But Lakshmi married Lord Vishnu.


Apsara Rambha

During the churning of the ocean, Indra obtained Rambha from the gods for his royal court. Disturbed by Vishwamitra's severe penance, Indra sent Rambha to break Vishwamitra's penance. Apsara is considered to be a resident of Gandharvaloka. Some people call them angels.


Parijat

Apart from the Kalpavriksha, the Parijat tree also originated during the churning of the ocean. Parijat flowers are very beautiful. The flowers of this tree have special significance in the worship of Hindu Gods and Goddesses. Its leaves and stems are also used in many diseases. Parijat or Harsingar is one of the major trees whose flowers hold an important place in the worship of God. Lakshmi, the goddess of wealth, loves Parijat flowers.

Varuni Devi

The liquor that originated during the churning of the ocean was named Varuni. Varun means water. Because it was born from water it was called Varuni. There is a god named Varuna, who was on the side of the demons. The demons took Varuni. The liquor made from Kadamba fruits is also called Varuni.

Conch

The conch shell originated as a gem during the churning of the ocean. Conch shell is considered one of the 14 gems. Conch is considered a symbol of victory, prosperity, happiness, peace, fame, fame and Lakshmi. Most importantly, the conch is a symbol of sound. This conch was dedicated to Lord Vishnu. That is why conch is blown compulsorily in Lakshmi-Vishnu puja.


Kamdhenu

Moon is called a water planet because it was created from water during the churning of the ocean. In his prayer, Lord Shiva gave him a place on his head. Brahmins-Kshatriyas have many clans, among them there are some clan names related to Moon, like Chandravanshi. According to mythological references, Moon is said to be the child of ascetic Atri and Anusuya.


Dhanvantari Dev

Lord Dhanvantari is considered to be a part of Vishnu and the father of Ayurveda. After his incarnation, he created Ayurveda for public welfare and gave its knowledge to sages and physicians.

Nectar (Amrit) 

At the end of the churning of the ocean, a pot of nectar emerged. Dhanvantari Dev had the nectar pot in his hand. When there was a fight between the gods and demons regarding the distribution of nectar, Lord Vishnu took the form of Mohini and distributed the nectar among the gods. Rahu drank the nectar by deceit, enraged Lord Vishnu cut off his head with his Chakra. The two parts of the body of this demon are called Rahu and Ketu.
