The Story of King Mahabali and the Festival of Onam
Mahbali, also known as Bali, was the son of Devamba and Virochana. He was the last ruler of Daitya Kindom, which is now known as Kerela.
He was not only strong but also wise and fair. His grandfather, Prahlada, a great devotee of Lord Vishnu, taught him to be kind and truthful. Because of his goodness, people loved him, and his kingdom was full of happiness and peace.
- King Mahabali’s Great Rule
Under King Mahabali’s leadership, his kingdom grew stronger. He even defeated Indra, the king of the Devas (gods), and took control of heaven, earth, and the underworld. Though he ruled over everything, he remained humble and cared for his people.
The Devas became worried about Mahabali’s power. They feared that no one could stop him if he grew even more substantial. So, they went to Lord Vishnu and asked for help.
- Lord Vishnu’s Clever Plan
At that time, King Mahabali performed a big ritual called Ashwamedha Yaga. This was a special ceremony to show his strength and power. During this Yaga, he gave gifts to anyone who asked.
To help the Devas, Lord Vishnu took the form of a small Brahmin boy named Vamana. This boy was kind and gentle. He went to the king and asked for a simple gift—three steps of land. Being generous, King Mahabali happily agreed.
- Vamana Growth:
But something magical happened! Vamana started growing bigger and bigger. With his first step, he covered the earth. With his second step, he covered heaven. There was no place left for his third step.
- Realization by King Mahabali:
When King Mahabali realized that the boy was none other than Lord Vishnu, he bowed down humbly. He offered his own head for Vamana’s third step. Vishnu placed his foot on Mahabali’s head and sent him to Suthala, a special world below the earth.
- Blessings by God Vishnu:
Because King Mahabali was so kind and loved his people, Lord Vishnu granted him a special blessing. Once every year, Mahabali is allowed to return to earth and visit his people. This visit is celebrated as Onam, a grand festival in Kerala.
- Onam festival.
During Onam, people welcome King Mahabali by decorating their homes with beautiful flower patterns called Pookalam, wearing new clothes, and preparing a grand feast called Onam Sadya.
Veda Vyasa: The Wise Sage Who Gave Us the Mahabharata
Veda Vyasa is a famous and wise sage who was born in the late Treta Yuga and lived through the Dvapara and Kali Yugas. His original name was Krishna Dvaipayana. Many Hindus worship him because he gave us important books like the Mahabharata and the eighteen Puranas.
- Early story:
Vyasa wanted to live a simple and quiet life, so he left his mother, Satyavati. However, he promised to return if she ever needed him. Later, Satyavati married King Shantanu, and they had two sons.
Sadly, both Shantanu and his sons died, leaving the kingdom without a ruler. This worried Satyavati because other kings might attack the kingdom without a leader.
- The story:
Remembering Vyasa’s promise, Satyavati called her son for help. She asked Vyasa to have children with the widows of her deceased sons. Vyasa agreed and had three sons—one with each widow and one with a maidservant. After this, Vyasa returned to his quiet life of meditation.
- The Epic:
When Vyasa wanted to write the Mahabharata, he asked Lord Ganesha to help. Ganesha agreed but had one condition—Vyasa had to tell the story without stopping. Vyasa was clever and made Ganesha promise to understand each verse before writing it. This way, Vyasa had time to think while Ganesha wrote down the great epic.
Hindu scriptures say that Vyasa is a Chiranjivi, which means he is an immortal who will live until the end of the Kali Yuga to guide people.
- Guru Purnima:
Every year, Hindus celebrate Guru Purnima on Vyasa’s birthday. This special day honors all teachers, as Vyasa is considered the greatest guru because he shared so much spiritual knowledge.
Thanks to Veda Vyasa, we have the Mahabharata, the Puranas, and many sacred teachings that still guide us today.

- Vibhishana advice:
When Ravana kidnapped Sita, the wife of Lord Rama, Vibhishana advised him to return her safely. He warned his brother that taking someone else's wife was wrong. But Ravana refused to listen. Seeing his brother’s pride and wrongdoings, Vibhishana left Lanka and joined Lord Rama’s army.

After the great battle, when Lord Rama defeated Ravana, he made Vibhishana the new King of Lanka. The people of Lanka respected Vibhishana for his honesty and fairness. In Sri Lanka, he was even worshiped as one of the "Four Heavenly Kings" (Satara Varam Deviyo).
