Brahma, Vishnu, and Mahesh are the trinity who is known as the creator, savior, and destroyer, respectively, of this world. You, as a kid, might have enjoyed watching many television shows of incarnations of Vishnu. He was shown as the preserver of Dharma. But the question remains: who is the biggest enemy of lord Vishnu? Well you will know by reading this blog.

Why did God Vishnu take incarnations?

Lord Krishna Ji , In one of his slokas, he stated that" यदा यदा हि धर्मस्य ग्लानिर्भवति भारत:। अभ्युत्थानमधर्मस्य तदात्मानं सृजाम्यहम्॥(चतुर्थ अध्याय, श्लोक 7)" That means being the avatar of Vishnu Ji , i will take more incarnations , for the sake of saving dharma and finish Adharma . So Vishnu ji took avatars to kill bad people. So given below is the list of who is the biggest enemy of lord Vishnu.

The 7 demons slayed by God Vishnu's avatars:

Most of the killings done by God Vishnu were by the wrong people, demons, and asuras, who used their power to trouble others. They believe in dominance, dharma, and becoming the owners of heaven and hell. Seeing this, God Vishnu, for his devotees, took incarnations and restored dharma. Given below is the list of demons he fought to restore dharma.

Madhu and Kaitabha – The Ocean Demons

The story is about two ocean demons, Madhu and Kaitabha. Do you know what is the twist? They were born from the dirt and sweat of God Vishnu while he was resting in the cosmic ocean. Slowly- slowly , the demons became super strong and started troubling God Brahma. They also stole the Vedas from BrahmaJi. With knowledge of everything and Vedas with them, the world was in great danger.

  • Action from God Vishnu:

God Vishnu, after a request from Brahma ji and other gods, woke up from deep sleep and God Vishnu got ready for the fight.Lord Vishnu battled Madhu and Kaitabha for five thousand years! That’s a very long fight! In the end, Vishnu tricked them by praising their bravery. The proud demons felt happy and told Vishnu, “Ask for a boon!”

Lord Vishnu smiled and said, “I want to destroy you now.”

Madhu and Kaitabha were shocked! But since they had made a promise, they had to agree. Lord Vishnu then took them to a place without water and destroyed them. It shows how smart and strong Vishnu is!

 Hiranyakashipu – The Proud King

If you are a Holi guy, you might have heard about Holika Dahan. Its story connects with one of the most powerful bhakts, Prahlad, and a feud with his father, Hiranyakashipu.

He was a very powerful and very proud demon king. He did lots of prayers to get a boon (a magical gift) that made him nearly invincible.

  • He could not be killed:
  • Inside or outside a house
  • During the day or night
  • By man or animal
  • On earth or in the sky
  • With any weapon made of metal or wood

Hiranyakashipu thought he was the greatest of all. He even told people not to pray to gods anymore!

But his own son, Prahlad, was a big devotee of Lord Vishnu. He loved Vishnu and prayed to him every day.

It made Hiranyakashipu very angry. He tried many times to punish and hurt Prahlad, but Vishnu always saved the boy.

Finally, Lord Vishnu appeared in a very special form—Narasimha, who was half-man and half-lion. He came at sunset (which is neither day nor night), on a doorstep (neither inside nor outside), and placed Hiranyakashipu on his lap (not on the ground or sky), and tore him apart with his sharp claws (not a weapon). Just like that, the evil king was defeated.

Vritra – The Snake Demon

The other demon on the list is God Vishnu, known as Vritra. He was a giant serpant who was responsible for blocking River Saraswati, thus stopping the flow of water. That made people thirsty, and also, due to the lack of water, the crops became damaged.

God Vishnu then helped Indra (devta king), giving him a weapon known as Vajra (a thunderbolt). Indra then fought with Vritra, killed him and then water started flowing again.

The Story of King Mahabali and Onam

  • King Mahbali, or Bali, was born to Virochana and Devamba. He was strong, wise, and a kind ruler. He was also the grandchild of Prahlada, and he learned from him to be good and truthful. He was loved and respected by everyone.
  • His grandfather, Prahlada, was a great devotee of Lord Vishnu and taught Mahabali always to be good and truthful. Everyone in his kingdom loved him, and his rule was full of peace and happiness.
  • Mahabali became so powerful that he defeated Indra and ruled over heaven, earth, and the underworld. But he remained humble and cared deeply for his people. The Devas got worried and asked Lord Vishnu to help.
  • At that time, Mahabali was doing a special Yaga where he gave gifts to everyone. Lord Vishnu took the form of a small Brahmin boy named Vamana and asked for just three steps of land. The kind king agreed.
  • But Vamana grew huge! With one step, he covered the earth; with the second, the sky. There was no space left. Mahabali realized Vamana was Lord Vishnu. He bowed down and offered his head for the third step.
  • Vishnu blessed him and sent him to Suthala. He also promised Mahabali could visit his people once a year—this is celebrated as Onam, Kerala’s biggest festival!
