Raksha Bandha, in literal terms, translates to “the knot of protection”. Usually, it is the dharma of every brother to protect his sister, but on Rakhi, they switch their roles. On this day, sisters tie Rakhi on the wrists of their brothers for their safety. Safety from all the negative energies and evil forces. Let’s see the auspicious muhurat and date for Raksha Bandhan in 2025.
Raksha Bandhan 2025 - Date and Timing
According to Indian tradition, Raksha Bandhan is usually celebrated on the Purnima tithi or full moon day of Shravan Shukla Paksha month. This year, the date for Raksha Bandhan falls on 9 August 2025, i.e., Saturday. Therefore, this day is also known as Shravan Purnima.
Purnima Starts - 8th August, 2025 2:13 PM
Purnima Ends - 9th August, 2025 1:25 PM
Since Raksha Bandhan is celebrated on the morning of Purnima, it will be celebrated on 9th August.
For Raksha Bandhan, it is also important to avoid certain times that are not considered good. According to the panchang, on Saturday, the first “Muhurat” (Time Period) after sunrise is not good, and the second one, called “Kulik Muhurat,” is also not good. So, it is best to celebrate the festival after 1 hour and 46 minutes from sunrise. It’s also best to avoid “Rahu Kaal,” which in Delhi will be from 9:08 AM to 10:47 AM on 9th August.
In short, on 9th August, you can celebrate Raksha Bandhan anytime before 1:25 PM, but avoid the bad times: the first 1 hour 46 minutes after sunrise and Rahu Kaal (9:08 to 10:47 AM). Since there is no Bhadra, you can celebrate the festival without any worry before 1:25 PM.
Why do we celebrate Raksha Bandhan?
The practice of tying a sacred thread for protection has been observed across cultures. Multiple references can also be taken from our Hindu scriptures to understand the origin of this festival.
One story relating to the Bhavishya Purana tells the tale of Sachi, Indra’s wife. She tied a thread around Indra’s wrist to protect him against harm in battle against the powerful demon king Bali.
Another story relates to the epic of the Mahabharata. When Krishna injures his hand, Draupadi tears off a piece of her sari (traditional Indian clothing) to wrap as a bandage around his hand. Krishna was moved by this loving and protective gesture of Draupadi and promised to protect her one day. And he kept his promise when the Kauravas tried to humiliate Draupadi. Krishna stepped in to save her from the evil Kauravas.
