Types of Muhurat

A Muhurat is a specific time chosen according to Vedic astrology for performing an activity. A Shubh Muhurat Calculator determines the most suitable time by analyzing Panchang elements such as Tithi, Vara (weekday), Nakshatra, Yoga, and Karana, along with auspicious and inauspicious time periods.

Auspicious Muhurat Periods

Brahma Muhurat

Occurs about 1 hour 36 minutes to 48 minutes before sunrise. It is considered the best time for meditation, yoga, prayer, and studying scriptures.

Abhijit Muhurat

A highly auspicious period around local midday. It is often chosen for important tasks when no other favorable Muhurat is available.

Vijaya Muhurat

A favorable time for activities that require success, such as competitions, legal matters, business decisions, and important initiatives.

Godhuli Muhurat

Occurs around sunset and is traditionally regarded as auspicious for certain ceremonies, including marriage and Griha Pravesh in many traditions.

Amrit Kalam

A highly auspicious period calculated from the day's Nakshatra. It is considered favorable for important work, travel, purchases, and new beginnings.

Inauspicious Muhurat Periods

Rahu Kalam

An inauspicious daily period during which starting new ventures, investments, and auspicious ceremonies is generally avoided.

Yamaganda

Another unfavorable daily period, especially for beginning important work or starting a journey.

Gulika (Kulika) Kalam

A period associated with Saturn. It is generally avoided for auspicious ceremonies, although some traditions consider it suitable for activities intended to have long-lasting results.

Dur Muhurat

A naturally occurring inauspicious period that is generally avoided for starting significant activities and ceremonies.

How Are These Muhurats Calculated?

The above Muhurats are calculated using the Hindu Panchang, which is based on the positions of the Sun and Moon. Depending on the type of Muhurat, different Panchang elements and astronomical calculations are used.

These calculations may include:

  • Tithi (Lunar Day): The Moon's phase on a particular day.

  • Vara (Weekday): Each weekday is associated with a ruling planet.

  • Nakshatra: The Moon's position among the 27 Nakshatras.

  • Yoga: A combination of the Sun's and Moon's positions.

  • Karana: Half of a Tithi, used in Muhurat selection.

  • Sunrise and Sunset: Used to calculate daily periods such as Rahu Kalam, Yamaganda, Gulika Kalam, Brahma Muhurat, and Abhijit Muhurat.

A Shubh Muhurat Calculator combines these calculations according to traditional Vedic astrology principles to help identify favorable times for important activities.

Why Does Shubh Muhurat Change by Location?

Shubh Muhurat changes by location because it is calculated using the local Hindu Panchang, which is based on the exact time of sunrise and sunset. Since these timings differ from one city to another, the Muhurat also changes.

The calculation depends on factors such as:

  • Sunrise and Sunset: Daily periods like Rahu Kalam, Yamaganda, Gulika Kalam, and Abhijit Muhurat are based on local sunrise and sunset.
  • Latitude and Longitude: Your location affects astronomical calculations and the timing of Muhurats.
  • Panchang Elements: Tithi, Nakshatra, Yoga, and Karana are calculated according to your location and time.
  • Lagna (Ascendant): For events like marriage or Griha Pravesh, the Lagna also changes with time and location.

Tip: Always choose your correct city in a Shubh Muhurat Calculator to get the most accurate Muhurat for your location.
