God Indra, the king of the heavens, was riding on his elephant Airavata and suddenly came across the great Sage Durvasa. On seeing Indra, Sage offered a garland of flowers to him. He accepted it through his elephant's trunk. But the elephant threw it on the ground. This reaction angered Sage Durvas, and he cursed that, along with Lord Indra and the devatas with him, they would lose all of their powers.
Aftermath Of Curse
After this incident, the Devtas began losing their powers and all their battles to the asuras (demons). The Asura Bali started winning all the battles against the devtas and soon gained control over the entire universe. As always, the devatas went to Lord Vishnu. Vishnu ji advised them to conduct the churning of the ocean, or Samudra Manthan, as it will also help them restore their energy by drinking the nectar, or amrit, that will come out during the churning.
